The first in a series of photos and stories from my 30 plus year involvement with Volkswagens.
Avon Park, 1993. That’s me behind the wheel of my self-built tube chassis 1954 oval race car. Engine was a normally aspirated 2165cc, fitted with a pair of 48IDAs which I’d bored out to 51mm just days before this event. The resulting increase in power was sufficient to see the car become the first n/a VW outside the US to run a 10 second 1/4 mile: 10.95 @ 125mph.
I sold the car in 1995. It disappeared off the scene and wasn’t heard of again until earlier this year (2012), when it was advertised for sale on ebay. It’s currently undergoing restoration and should be making a return to the track in 2013.
